03 - Outpatient Custom Font

To get this out of the way if you don’t feel like reading the post, it’s not long but just want to say that I plan on releasing the font on the game’s release for people to use. Reason being is that I decided for no reason whatsoever to make this font include every single symbol possible.


Onto the post lol:

So to start, I wanted to make this font based on the title logo text (I did the title before the actual font to be used in-game). Yea, prior I was debating on the font but that’s besides the point (will show later here). Anyways, because of that, I decided on making the font include all capital letters (also as a way to reduce workload on doing literally everything I can put into a font). I might go back and include lower case but primarily be using capital letters in-game still, gotta debate on that actually. I guess you can say that it’s “OUTPATIENT” and not “Outpatient,” ngl i might do that more going forward.

Anyways, here’s the font so far, note that this font is still in development and nothing is final. Due to that, I’ll only be showing the completed sections of the font as of how PixelForge organized it (shout out to it if you want to make pixelated fonts yourself, it’s here on itch.io also).

On one hand, it’s fun to go through different characters for different languages but on the other hand, it gets very difficult trying to work in the confines of pixel art, especially since I’m trying to keep each character mainly in 4x5, but I need to just break those bounds sometimes, either going to 4x9 or changing the width in intervals of 5 so some stuff can just take up the size of 9x5 or 14x5 even.

Anyways, with how I’m doing this, I’m doing a basic Latin font and then this huge font with every character possible. I’ll probably separate different languages/alphabets into different .TTF files but idk. Definitely just comes down to if and how I might go about translations for this. We’ll see, but I don’t know if I can guarantee official translations or localizations for this but don’t say that it’s not happening 100% either, not at this point of the game’s development anyways.

I think regardless, I need to probably just find out a better way at going about wanting to do fonts for translations, definitely could cut down time on it since not every Unicode symbol is needed. idk, I'll figure it out when i get there. For now though, I'm definitely going to settle on getting the basic Latin symbols done and finalized at least.


Anyways, there isn’t much else to this post, pretty short compared to my other ones. So, I’ll leave off on 3 things:

One, asking you guys if I should keep with doing all capital letters for the font, capital characters other than Latin especially, or should I include lowercase as well? I wish I could put polls on here but I’ll just hope someone leaves a comment, regardless I’ll figure it out anyways lol.

Secondly, I figured that I may as well show off the font in actual use, so here's a few memes and quotes in the context of Rianne and Costel saying them. And lastly, since this post was pretty short (I'm literally just extending the length at this point), I'm gonna share another sketch I made for this post. Honestly going forward, I'm gonna share at least one or more sketches each post, as a way, it honestly helps me a lot more subsequently, since I can now actively do more concept art, so win win ig lol.
