01 - A Lot Done (Character Art Update)

DO NOT REPOST ANY OF THE ART SHOWN UNTIL RELEASE

I’m already fairly hesitant with posting my stuff like this for that reason but I of course can’t control if people choose to do so. Yet, at least, asking people not to can dissuade some from doing so.

Simply put, don’t repost my work until the game’s release, nor steal any of my work or repost without credit. That’s all I ask for.

You're fine with reacting to these dev logs or something like that, I don’t mind that.

Anyways onto the main post:

Ok, so I meant to post this back on 11/29/2023 but I hadn’t had the chance to, so time to talk about some of the stuff I’ve done over the past month. Happy holidays and Happy New Years btw.

I won’t be sharing much just yet but I’ll be focusing on some of the artwork I’ve done, mainly just the character art I’ve done. I won’t be going in depth about the characters information just yet, likely gonna save that for the next post. Also sorry if I get a bit redundant or repetitive with this post and any future posts, im not exactly caring too much about how grammatical i am with this and mostly just doing this stuff for fun lol.

The Protagonist - The Dragon

So to just sorta recap on timing, as stated in the game description, I had a dream on 11/2/2023. I then decided I would turn it into a game, 16 days later, on 11/18/2023.

The first finished art I made for this was on 11/19/2023 (1st design from the image), it being finished at about 4AM going by the file date. Idk how long it took for me to make the art but I have it listed that I started on 11/18. I don't really time how long it takes me to do stuff, mostly just the days I do. I really should decide on if I should start dating my start times and end times for each work I do, just in general to be honest.

The protag is this dragon who I was in the POV of in the dream I had. Compared to the dream, I had definitely reworked some of his design traits. Initially, he was red with white under plating to him (idk dragon terminology), and he had this large red woven sweater with a white polo shirt underneath. With how large the sweater was, it acted as almost like he was wearing one of those hospital gowns (for lack of a better example). My main change for this design was that for the sprite work, I didn't draw out his white scales, opting for only red. I then made the sweater smaller and gave him the black pants for better contrast for the overall design (next image set of designs).

I did however get conflicted with wanting to do more with the design, so I then added the white scales back into the design (11/21/2023) (3rd design). However, I wasn't too certain on what I wanted to do so I then decided to ask some of my friends to try to decide on these two designs and we landed on the former (2nd design).

Anyways idk how to transition to the next few designs i got so here's all of the few prior design processes i've done before finalizing it lol:

So, you might have seen the updated cover art for the game (finished on 1/4/2024), both including the dragon character and another sheep character on the right. I won’t be talking about who they both are for now in this post, but I did want to mention that I really still liked the red and white design for the dragon, so I’m simply gonna do that thing where you have any overworld sprites less detailed than the actual designs ig, idk. I still have the chance to make that 3rd design as the main sprites used in-game instead but yea. Idk I'll work it out later on.

The Deuteragonist - The Sheep

Anyways now to move to the obvious deuteragonist/antagonist/whatever lol.

So the sheep was also in the dream I had (not gonna mention what happened for spoiler reasons). Yet, of course, since I chose this sheep character to be the second character, you can imagine that they were the most prevalent part in that dream.

Their design process didn’t have as much external input compared to the dragon. Involving their original design from the dream, their wool was partly black on their back side and they wore some sort of bandana alongside a black jacket. I couldn’t figure out how to get the colors for their wool to work out in pixel art so I opted to simply have their wool fully white (might change that for other artwork but who knows). Also in the dream, they were only wearing the jacket and the bandana and I somewhat felt like keeping them that way (excluding the removal of the bandana) (that design finished on 11/23/2023), since you know, a sheep’s wool practically acts as like their clothing/warmth. However, later on, I felt like trying to recreate the characters in Hero Forge (this DND character creation website) and I didn’t like how the sheep looked with only the jacket, so I then gave them a shirt and pants of similar color to their wool, and somehow that turned the design to look so much better. +10 Style points right there lol.

So I then added the extra clothing to them and it perfected their design. Afterwards, something I also did in Hero Forge, were alternate colors, swapping the clothing colors between the two. One last thing to mention is that while I was typing this post, I tried adding back the bandana and part of me kinda likes it but there’s a low chance of me adding it back since I already finished the cover art. That or I leave the cover art be and throw in the bandana to shortly be seen in-game before being taken off or something. Idk I’ll debate it later.

Anyways, here’s the art:

I don’t feel like posting the Hero Forge recreated designs but maybe if a few people ask for them I’ll post it in the next one (I don’t feel like going to screenshot them rn lol).

Anyways, there's some more stuff I’ve done, like walking and running animations for the dragon but I’m gonna post those when I have the animations done for the sheep as well.

Welp that’s about it for this devlog, for the next few posts, here’s what I know I’ll post soon (all in no defined order):

  1. Character Bios
  2. Environment Assets
  3. Outpatient Logo & Cover Art Process
  4. Outpatient Custom Font

Take care and hope you enjoyed this read on the development so far.
