02 - The Main Characters

DO NOT REPOST ANY OF THE ART SHOWN UNTIL RELEASE
As a preface, note that all of this is subject to change, mainly since I’m still writing out the story and there’s always the chance that I end up changing some aspects about the characters or their personalities. Due to that, I’ll mainly be focusing on the most grounded aspects I’ve decided for these two. I won’t be saying too much about their personalities but just enough to avoid spoiling what I’ve got in mind for the story.
Again, no promises until release lol.
Anyways, onto introducing them to y’all :D
Costel - The Dragon
Costel: the main perspective that the player plays as throughout the game. He is a 17 year old dragon standing at a height of 5’10” or 1.778m (excluding the added height of his horns).
Costel is very much astute when it comes to things in their life: the horror protagonist that has actual logic lol. Yet, despite being able to make decisions with a level head, he tends to struggle or hesitate on actually acting on certain decisions. He has good logic when going about things, yes, but he becomes conflicted more so when it involves the emotions, feelings, or perspectives of others. Simply put, Costel is logistical and insightful but hesitant and indecisive on a social level.
As stated from the prior post, Costel was the person I was in the perspective of for the dream I had. But if I was in a first person point of view for it, then how did I know what Costel looked like? Idk lol. I suppose my best answer is that natural dream intuition of simply knowing what can’t be known. Of course, the design I have for him now strayed slightly from how I know how he looked like, partly due to my artstyle adapting how he looks alongside a few design changes, but yea. Speaking of that "dream intuition," that was honestly how I got the age of Costel, being 17. I’m not 17 myself but I just somehow knew that he was. I didn’t get the idea for his name from the dream though, I had to work that out myself.
So, regarding the naming process for Costel, and also subsequently the sheep character (who’s name process I’ll explain in their section), I absolutely suck at trying to name characters. Whenever I do, I tend to either take a name out of a list of cool names I find and keep track of, somehow name someone standalone of that, look up websites for names to think of, or just straight up leave characters unnamed because I can’t decide on it. Yet, ironically, I’ve been told this a few times before but, whenever I do manage to come up with a name for a character, it’s usually said to be such cool or interesting names. Idk, maybe I just care a lot about the names I give to characters and will either leave them unnamed until decided or name them because a prior name ended up sticking with them.
Anyways, Costel’s name process: I went about his name by checking a few websites on good ideas (shout out to adoption.com/baby-names and BehindTheName.com). I don’t know how to really go about talking about the many names I got for Costel but here’s the entire list before I decided, note this list also includes names for the sheep:
- Cath
- Dibon
- Dimon
- Costel
- Maxence
- Meirion
- Metis
- Mihail / Mihal (mistyped)
- Oles
- Ovid
- Rianne
- Seneca
- Themis
- Ulisses / Ulysses
- Viera
After picking out these few names, I then narrowed them all down in several passes, removing certain names that I wasn’t too certain on. Side note, I will say, the first 3 names I picked out were focused towards Costel before I just tossed them to the side. I can show the passes I did actually:
Cath,Dibon,Dimon, Costel,Maxence,Meirion, Metis,Mihail / Mihal, Oles,Ovid, Rianne, Seneca, Themis,Ulisses / Ulysses,Viera- Costel,
Metis,Oles, Rianne, Seneca,Themis - Costel, Rianne, Seneca
I did this in passes mostly to just narrow down what names I liked without doing it all in one go.
Anyways, you can tell that I pretty much felt satisfied with Costel’s name, but ironically, his name I decided on 100% after I decided on the name for the sheep. And now to stop holding back on their name, I can go all in now lol.
Rianne - The Sheep
Oh Rianne, the sheep on the elevator (idk I tried making it sound funny). Rianne, I don’t think I would consider them 100% an antagonist yet not 100% a deuteragonist either – or maybe that’s the definition of a deuteragonist anyways? Regardless, you’ll see when the game is finished. Anyways, Rianne is a 19 year old sheep, shorter than Costel, at 5’8” or 1.727m. Rianne might seem like they are almost the same height as Costel but their wool makes them appear taller than they actually are.
So Rianne, in contrast to Costel, is very determined in their goals, actively choosing and making decisions, wanting the best for others' well being. Yet, despite their ability to put their focus into certain goals, that strength comes as their flaw as well. They tend to sometimes put too much dedication or focus into things, sometimes losing sight of other aspects about their goals. Rianne – as truly determined and actively initiative they are – can be blinded or fixated in their goals.
As I mentioned with the elevator from earlier, Rianne was someone I saw (or Costel saw) in the dream I had. I don’t mind telling about this dream interaction since it doesn’t really spoil much of the story I have planned, but pretty much: Costel walked into the elevator and there were 4 other people inside, and Rianne was the most notable one. The elevator closed and it headed down from the floor Costel was on. Rianne then tells a joke to everyone in the elevator, or atleast continuing the conversation with the person they were talking to, I’m not too sure. It was hard for me to remember the joke but it had something to do with sheep and “fleece.” Anyways, Rianne then walked out of the elevator, finishing their joke, still holding onto their jacket at the zipper’s sides (like in the cover art), saying goodbye to everyone on the elevator, and headed off. The elevator then closed and it continued to descend further until the floor I selected.
Anyways, that’s about it for these two: this dragon and this lamb. There isn’t much else to talk about so I’m gonna just share some more artwork I’ve made of them. Note that literally none of this was made for the sake of concept art and mostly because I haven’t made any other art of them yet so I’m making some quick sketches specifically for this post lol (I’m going about art and concepts as I go, don’t worry you’ll get more concept art as I finish up the story more). Regardless, hope these few drawings help give you guys more ideas about their personalities.
Hope you guys enjoyed this post. Idk if I’ll be able to send out a new post this fast again since school is starting up again but here’s the few posts I’ll be doing for the future (just rehashing the list from last post with some added extra stuff) (again, no particular order):
- Environment Assets
- Outpatient Logo & Cover Art Process
- Outpatient Custom Font
- Game Animations (once Rianne is done)
- Menu/GUI Design
